CREIGHTON MODEL
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding while simultaneously observing the body during the return of fertility after childbirth can be a challenge for women and their spouses who wish to use Natural Family Planning methods. The return of fertility postpartum depends primarily on the pattern and duration of breastfeeding.
The suppressive effect of the primary lactation hormone—prolactin—on ovulation plays a key role in the appearance and quality of vaginal discharge and cervical mucus observations. Through these observations, it is possible to monitor:
the approaching time of the first postpartum ovulation,
the onset of the first menstruation or menstruation-like bleeding,
gynecological health status,
the characteristics and variability of the early postpartum cycle phases,
periods of potential fertility and infertility during the postpartum time.
Breastfeeding – Observation Guidelines
Thanks to the clear and standardized observation guidelines of the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System, the return of fertility after childbirth does not remain a mystery, but becomes an expected and physiological process. In this time, the guidance of a trained FertilityCare practitioner is invaluable.
It is best to begin learning the observation system during the third trimester of pregnancy, or at the latest during the early postpartum period, by scheduling an introductory session with a Creighton Model practitioner. During this meeting, the basic principles of observation and possible patterns of returning fertility will be explained.
With a proper understanding of physiology and the ability to accurately observe and interpret biomarkers, couples are empowered to make informed decisions regarding their family planning.
