NAPROTECHNOLOGY®
The Treatment Process
Infertility is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom that may indicate one or more underlying medical conditions requiring diagnosis and treatment. Restoring procreative health therefore requires an individualized, interdisciplinary, and cause-directed approach—the foundation of NaProTECHNOLOGY®.
Treatment integrates:
cycle charting using the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System,
comprehensive evaluation of both the woman and the man,
evidence-based medical and surgical treatment, when clinically indicated.
Depending on the underlying diagnosis, the treatment process typically takes 6 to 24 months and consists of three stages.
Stage I – Identifying the Underlying Cause
- learning to chart the menstrual cycle using the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System,
- laboratory testing, including hormone profiles correlated with the woman’s cycle chart,
- comprehensive semen analysis,
- an initial consultation with a physician trained in NaProTECHNOLOGY® for both partners, including ultrasound examination and the initiation of targeted diagnostic evaluation and treatment,
- consultation with a registered dietitian, including an individualized nutrition plan designed to reduce inflammation where appropriate and optimize nutritional status based on laboratory findings and medical history,
- evaluation by a pelvic floor physical therapist to assess functional disorders of the pelvic floor.
Stage II – Restoring Reproductive Health
- regular follow-up visits with the treating physician,
- continued Creighton Model charting,
- prescribed medical therapy,
- individualized nutritional therapy,
- microbiological testing and treatment when indicated,
- diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, hysterosalpingography (HSG) or sonohysterosalpingography (HyCoSy/Sono-HSG), and microsurgical varicocele repair for appropriately selected male patients, using adhesion-prevention strategies whenever applicable.
Stage III – Maintaining Healthy Cycles
- ongoing cycle chart reviews with a FertilityCare Practitioner,
- continued medical therapy and nutritional recommendations when indicated,
- achieving and maintaining healthy cycle characteristics, including
-
- optimal Peak +7 hormone levels
- (Progesterone: 18–31 ng/mL [60–100 nmol/L];
- Estradiol: 109–283 pg/mL [400–900 pmol/L]),
- healthy cervical mucus patterns,
- normal menstrual bleeding,
- effective management of premenstrual symptoms (PMS),
- ultrasound confirmation of ovulation (follicular rupture),
- optimal Peak +7 hormone levels
-
- appropriately timed intercourse during the fertile window when pregnancy is desired,
- stress awareness and healthy stress-management strategies,
- regular, moderate physical activity,
- ongoing follow-up with the treating physician.
